Katherine Lofft for House Seat 53

Hello!   My name is Kathy Lofft, and I am pleased to be running for the Utah state House of Representatives from District 53.    Thank you for visiting my website – I hope the information provided here is helpful to you.

I am very excited to be a part of the race for House seat 53!  I have heard this race described as one of the most important state legislative races of this year.   I do believe that we have a real opportunity to help contribute to a substantive and productive dialogue about the best direction for our state and the district.   If I am successful, we will have a meaningful opportunity to impact the legislative agenda in the coming years.

I am running because I believe we’ll have better laws and more effective representation only when our state House boasts a diversity of backgrounds, viewpoints and approaches.    I also want to help ensure that we have a legislature that is responsive to the expressed needs and concerns of the people it represents.   Finally, I am committed to helping ensure that our legislature upholds the highest standards of ethics and integrity, and that it discharges its responsibilities with the utmost care and consideration.

In the coming months, I look forward to meeting voters across the district and discussing the issues that matter to them.   There are a number of areas I would like to focus on as part of that discussion.   For instance, I believe we can and should do more to encourage and create incentives for economic development, particularly in rural areas.  I think there’s a real opportunity to bring the benefits of clean energy development and production, including for biodiesel and wind power, to outlying areas of the district.

I believe we can do much more to ensure that all of us – particularly our children – have clean air to breathe, and clean water to drink.   For too long, it seems our representatives have been more intent on denying the existence of global warming than to acknowledge, much less do anything about, the demonstrated adverse health impacts of dirty air and water in our area, and I believe that can and should change.

I think we can do much more to ensure that quality, affordable health care, including preventative care, is made available to all.  While it is true that meaningful health care reform will require action and input from various quarters, including the federal government, I believe our legislature can do more.  For instance, we should work harder to ensure that our local market is open to a broad range of insurers.  I believe we can also do more to ensure that quality coverage and care is available to the poor and underserved.

From these and other issues including support for families and children at risk, and ethics in government, there is much to talk about and there are significant improvements to be made in the status quo.    If you have any questions or suggestions about this site or my campaign, please do not hesitate to contact me directly – I welcome hearing from you.    Thank you again for your interest, and I look forward to your support!
