Biography

Katherine (Kathy) Lofft is a 41-year old attorney and community volunteer who lives with her husband, Alex, in Park City.  Her parents currently live in Logan, Utah.   Relocating from Washington, DC nearly four years ago, the Loffts were drawn to Utah in part by the abundant natural beauty of the area and the myriad outdoor recreational activities.   Kathy and her husband have each demonstrated their commitment to the state and its people through public service and charitable activities.

Kathy has a long history as a volunteer and advocate.  As a young girl, she was active in Girl Scouts and 4-H, and helped her mother design posters for various charity events.  In law school, she was a hotline volunteer for a women’s shelter and interned with a children’s rights organization.   During her early career as a lawyer, she worked on elder law issues and in support of social entrepreneurship.   Currently, Kathy is on the executive committee of the Board of Directors and a volunteer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake and Habitat for Humanity for Summit & Wasatch Counties.  She is also a co-founder of the new Park City chapter of Utah Moms for Clean Air.

With an outstanding background of personal and professional achievement, Kathy exhibits a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence in all that she does.   She began her career as a paralegal with law firms in Washington and Philadelphia.   On graduating from law school, she went to work for the prestigious international law firm of Latham & Watkins.  In short order, she was hired by the division of an aerospace company, then a firm client, as the company’s vice president and assistant general counsel.  This was the first step in what was to become a 10-year career as a corporate lawyer, business executive and manager.   She was privileged to work for three years as general counsel for a division of GE Commercial Finance (formerly GE Capital) that had, at the time, over $3.5 billion in assets.  Kathy is currently the principal of Alliance Legal Services, representing small and mid-sized businesses and individual entrepreneurs and investors in the greater Park City and Salt Lake City areas.

Kathy’s personal history includes events that have given her a keen understanding of and appreciation for some of the issues she believes are important to the people living in District 53.   Kathy spent her early childhood in rural New Hampshire, in the same town where her father’s family had once owned a sizable farm – a farm sold when it became clear, among other things, that it was not sustainable by the family.  A product of the public education system, Mrs. Lofft is the first person in her immediate family to attend college and the only person to complete graduate school, achievements which were made possible largely by scholarships and government loans.  A cancer survivor, she cares deeply about the effect environmental impacts (including pollution) have on health, and is committed to the idea that all people – including children – should have access to quality and affordable medical care, including preventative care.

In her spare time, Kathy enjoys downhill skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, hiking with her husband and 3 dogs, and reading (primarily literary fiction and political biographies).
