Highlights from in and around the District
The Labor Day events mark the last of my summer activities. You can see more recent coverage of our efforts in our PRESS section
During the fall runup to Election Day (November 4), I will be visiting with voters throughout District 53. Please feel free to contact me about attending/speaking at a specific event.
September 1, 2008 - Park City
On an unseasonably
cold day, following a night of heavy precipitation that left a light
dusting of snow at the highest elevations, my husband, Alex, and I –
along with some intrepid volunteers! – marched in the “funky” Old
Miners’ Day Parade in Park City! My campaign entry – featuring a
“mint” restored ’68 Mustang, together with my new Ford Escape hybrid –
was intended as an homage to automotive innovation leading to the
production of more energy-efficient
vehicles, but that theme was quickly
subordinated to a more powerful objective – keeping warm! In true Park
City spirit, most of the parade participants turned out in their “funky”
best and entertained a crowd of spectators which was, by rights, larger
than it would have been anywhere else, given the weather. Although my
fingertips are still thawing, I had a great time! A big “thank you”
goes out to John and Pam Williams, Kenny Kruse, Bobbie Pyron and Todd
Blackley, Kathryn Toll, Julie Hooker Baker and Pat Cone for all their
help in making the parade so much fun, and a successful one for my
campaign!
August 30, 2008 – Park City Although not a campaign event per se, I can’t help but mention that my husband, Alex, and I rallied after a long day of ‘parading’ to attend the Dwight Yoakam concert at the Snow Park Amphitheater. What a concert – the place rocked! By far one of the best outdoor concerts we’ve seen in recent years!
August 30, 2008 – Francis On August 30 (not long after leaving the Midway Swiss Days parade), my husband, Alex, and I marched in the Francis Frontier Days parade, together with many of the candidates for the new Summit County Council. Turnout was good on the first of the two-day Frontier Days celebration, and people were in festive spirits! Jogging from one side of the road to the other (first off Rt. 35, then off Rt. 32), I managed to meet many new folks, while still catching up with old friends, but I got left behind and only caught up with my parade entry (and ride home!) at the end of the parade route! After leaving the festival we stopped at Dick’s in Kamas for some of their famous ice-cream shakes!
August 30, 2008 - Midway My husband, Alex, and I, together with our good friend, Cathy King, and some of our dogs, marched in the Midway Swiss Days parade August 30th. It was a lovely morning and the parade route was crowded with spectators. With over 80 entries, the parade presented a loud and colorful spectacle as it worked its way down Main Street. We appreciate the many people who waved and cheered us on for their enthusiasm and support! We ended the evening with a fabulous dinner at the new Rhode Island Diner in Oakley (best meatloaf in the area)! A great night!
August 29, 2008 - Peoa After rushing out to pick up my new lawn signs, my husband, Alex, and I arrived just in time to catch the latter part of the last free Mountain Town Stages summer concert at Woodenshoe Park. Together with many good friends from the area (and more dogs than can possibly live in all of Peoa!), we enjoyed the sounds of “Mister Sister”, a 3-member acoustic band whose repertoire runs from country to folk to blues. The band indulged the crowd with at least a couple of encores, and we left only after a spectacular sunset had passed in favor of a star-filled sky. A wonderful evening!
August 21, 2008 - Park City
On Thursday, my husband
and I attended the Friends of Animals’ Barking Ball at Park City
Mountain Resort. Over the course of the evening we had the opportunity
to meet and talk to dozens of area residents and voters, all of whom are
hungry for change and a
new direction in government. The Barking Ball
was well-attended and well-run, and everyone there seemed to have a
great time!
Alex and I are the proud caretakers of a dog that FOA rescued and fostered several years ago – we truly believe the organization was responsible for helping to save his life, and for this we are eternally grateful! We appreciate all that FOA and its wonderful and committed Board members, staff and volunteers do to protect and provide for animals. Thanks, FOA, for being a great organization and for all that you do in the community!
August 11, 2008 - Park City My campaign held its first
fundraiser at Gallery MAR on Main Street in Old Town. Hosted by Mary
Jacquin, the event drew over 20 supporters including Rep. Christine
Johnson (D – District 25), Summit County Commissioner Sally
Elliott and
Park City Councilmember Liza Simpson.
I’d like to thank everyone who attended this event – I appreciate your support! I am particularly grateful to those who took the time to share their ideas and concerns with me. It will take all of us working together to bring real change to our state government!
I want to extend my deepest thanks to Mary Jacquin, Maren Bargreen with galleryMAR, Eileen Dunn with Done to Your Taste Catering and the many others who helped make this fundraiser a resounding success!
August 9, 2008 - Coalville On Saturday my husband, Alex, and I attended the Summit County Fair. We stopped first at the Art Show, where we amazed with the quality of paintings and photography on display! We then moved on to the 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock Sale, where we watched portions of the hog and steer auction. We spent some time touring the fairgrounds and visiting the booths, including the Summit County Search and Rescue booth.
We ended the afternoon at the market lambs auction at the Junior Livestock Sale. What an exciting event! Before a packed house, I had the opportunity to bid on – and win! – a 113 pound lamb owned by Cache Bisel, a local member of 4-H. Cache and his family graciously offered us a plate of homemade chocolate-chip cookies – some of the best I’ve had recently – as a “thank-you” for my support of Cache and the 4-H organization. The lamb has been donated for the benefit of the residents of the South Summit Senior Citizens Center in Kamas.
We had a great time, and we look forward with eager anticipation to next
year!
August 2, 2008 - Heber My husband, several volunteers and I participated in the Wasatch County Fair Days Parade. Although it was a hot afternoon, incoming clouds helped us stay comfortable as we walked the 10-block route down Main Street in Heber. The parade was well attended with enthusiastic crowds, and we are excited about the positive feedback we received. Thanks to everyone for the generous reception!
August 1 & 2, 2008 - Morgan My husband and I attended the Morgan County Fair on both Friday and Saturday afternoon. We helped the county Democrats hand out water and candy to the kids, and we were able to visit several of the booths. We also enjoyed seeing a bit of the rodeo on Friday and listening to some fine country music both days. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to talk to us!
July 30, 2008 - Kamas I attended the last in a four-part series of community input sessions conducted by the East Side Planning Commission to discuss the mission statement and objectives of the Commission and the East Side Development Code.
July 28 - Park City My husband and I hosted a precinct leader's meeting for 5 Park City precincts to discuss voter outreach, and how best to register people and turn out the vote on Election Day!
July 27 - Park City My husband, some friends and I manned an advocacy table for clean air and clean energy at Park City's weekly open-air Main Street market.
July 24 - Kamas To celebrate Pioneer Day, I participated in the Kamas Fiesta Days parade by riding the float entered by one of my favorite local non-profits (on whose board I serve). After the parade, my husband, some friends and I distributed some campaign materials and talked to local revelers. Dinner at Pasillas wrapped up a fun afternoon.
July 23 - Oakley I attended the third in a series of community input sessions conducted by the East Side Planning Commission to discuss the mission statement and objectives of the Commission and the East Side Development Code.
July 19 - Park City My husband, our 3 dogs, some friends and I attended the Friends of Animals' Bark in the Park event at Willow Creek Park where we had the chance to see some old friends and meet some new (human and canine) friends. We enjoyed the agility, frisbee and other competitions - my congratulations to all the event winners. Kudos to FOA for a great event!
July 9 - Wanship I attended the second in a series of community input sessions conducted by the East Side Planning Commission to discuss the mission statement and objectives of the Commission and the East Side Development Code. After the meeting, we strolled over to the Spring Chicken Inn for some fabulous fried chicken and homemade pie - the perfect end to an informative evening.
July 4 - Park City My parents, husband, friends and I
watched the Independence Day parade and then met with people at the
follow-on party at City Park. We enjoyed great music, good company
and a beautiful day. It was a perfect way to celebrate our
nation's 232nd birthday!
July 3 - Oakley My parents, husband and I attended the Oakley Rodeo's second evening of competition. The competition was electrifying, the hospitality warm and the fireworks breathtaking. What a great evening!
June 25 - Henefer I attended the second in a series of community input sessions conducted by the East Side Planning Commission to discuss the mission statement and objectives of the Commission and the East Side Development Code.
June 20 - Park City My husband and I dined at Savior the Summit, met up with friends, walked the open air Main Street dinner event and distributed campaign materials. What fun to see this annual event revived! We were happy to be able to participate!
May 31 - Woodland I attended an event in Woodland co-hosted by John and Pam Williams and their daughter, Jonelle Simons. Approximately 40 people enjoyed grilled chicken and bratwurst, all while discussing issues pertaining to health care and health care spending in this country, including better ways to ensure that quality and affordable medical care is available to all.
May 9-10 - Salt Lake City I attended and spoke to delegates at the state Democratic Party convention. I emerged as the official Democratic candidate representing District 53, having earned well over the minimum number of votes required to avoid a primary election in June (see more in PRESS). I thank you for, and am humbled by, your support and your efforts on my behalf. On to November!!
April 25 - Heber City I appeared at the Wasatch County Democratic Party convention at the Wasatch County Library and Seniors Citizens Center in Heber. Passions ran high at the meeting, with nearly all of the speakers and attendees expressing outrage at state H.B. 466 (as amended in this last session by H.B. 164), the so-called “municipal incorporation” bill sponsored by the District 53 incumbent. It is clear that voters want the legislature to repeal this ill-considered and extremely flawed legislation!
April 12 - Salt Lake City I attended the first annual
Statewide College Democrats of Utah Convention hosted by the College
Caucus of the Young Democrats of Utah. The turnout was
strong, the attendees enthusiastic and it was great to meet the next generation of party leaders in Utah! Many thanks to
Aaron Curtis, Julia Huddleston and the other organizers, and to those
students who signed up to volunteer for my campaign!

April 12 - Park City I spoke at the Summit County Democratic Convention at the Legacy Lodge at Park City Mountain Resort (to read my speech click here) where attendance was overwhelming. A big “thank you” to everyone who ran for council, and congratulations to the winners: Sally Elliott, Claudia McMullin, John Hanrahan, Chris Robinson and Steve Weinstein.
April 9 - Morgan I attended a buffet dinner and county council candidate forum held in Morgan. My husband, Alex, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet and get to know some new friends in the county.
March 19 - Park City My husband and I attended the Summit County Democrats meeting at the Legacy Lodge at Park City Mountain Resort. The keynote address was given by former US Senator Gary Hart and focused on a new national security strategy addressing terrorism and global resource security (energy, food, water). With four other friends, we had the opportunity to join the Senator at a late dinner at Shabu..
March 14 - Coalville With the objective of bringing representative, responsive and ethical government to Utah, I filed to run for the state House of Representatives from District 53.
